Dive into the 'Cycle of Compost' puzzle, where food scraps turn into nutrient-rich soil in a continuous, eco-friendly loop!
Grade Level: 2 - 8
Time: 5 - 15 minutes
Learning Standards: ESS3.C, LS2.A, ETS1.B, MP.7, MP.2, SL1, SL3, SL4, RF4
This simple activity allows student to manipulate 5 arrow-shaped pieces into a circular puzzle that represents the "Cycle of Compost."
Each piece shows an illustrative image of the relationship between food, decomposition & soil: a child snacks on a carrot; food scraps are discarded into a compost bin; a compost pile is worked in the garden; compost decomposes into soil to grow carrots; carrots are ready to be harvested from the garden.
When placed in the proper order, the pieces fit together and arrows indicate how the cyclical nature of compost makes it such an important practice!
Physical Puzzle: Printer (ideally color), paper (sturdy cardstock preferred), scissors
Digital Version: Online access to Google Suite (Google classroom) - each student gets a copy
There are two ways to carry out this activity with students:
Physical Puzzle: Click the link below for a printable PDF version of the puzzle. Print as many color copies as you need and either cut the puzzle yourself, or have student do the cutting. Then the 5 puzzle pieces can be used to assemble the "Cycle of Compost" in the proper order.
Digital Version: Make a copy of the Google Slide version of the puzzle and then play with students online - a copy can be made for each individual student to carry out the activity on their own, or you can do it together as a class/group.
