The movement of molecules in water will change based on the temperature of the water. These activites will showcase this concept visually for students.
Grade Level: 3 - 8
Time: 10 - 20 minutes
Learning Standards: PS1.A, PS1.B, MP.2, SL1
Because heat is energy, that energy is transferred to the water molecules making them move. The molecule movement is in direct correlation to the temperature of the water.
Two clear cups - glass or plastic
Food coloring
Hot water
Cold Water
Fill one cup 3/4 full with cold water
If possible, prepare this water by adding ice to lower the temperature, but then remove the ice prior to adding coloring.
Fill one cup 3/4 full with hot water
Heat in microwave or the hottest temperatures out of the faucet.
Once the cups are prepared, simultaneously add a few drops of food coloring into each glass.
This can be done with a partner or using two hands.
The hot water cup will show the coloring move around much faster. In the cold water cup, the color may remain concentrated in one area.
